  1. Hi All. I recently has a customer of mine bring me their old Dell laptop to me when it failed to boot into windows 10. The issue was it would blue screen during the boot sequence and give the error "BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO". I was able to get into the advanced recovery features built into windows 10, however no matter what i tried, including "resetting" windows 10, would either fail or come up with the error that the drive was locked. I tested the laptop's Hard Drive through my own PC and attempted to "fix" it with the CHKDSK command. I completed that and put the drive back into the laptop, same issue, same blue screen of death (BSOD) After doing some digging through various forums, i found a solution that worked for me. It involves a registry fix that unfortunately needs to be performed through Command Prompt. The other problem is that you need to boot from a USB bootable version of the Windows 10 Installer or a Windows 10 Disc. If you try the commands within the recovery console within your original hard drive, it will give you an error. For the first part of this fix, you are going to need access to another computer or a copy of the windows 10 installation files. We will not be reinstalling windows 10, but we will be using the recovery tools built into the installer instead. I will apologize in advance, i do not have any screen shots to make this a little easier for you, as I am typing this a full day after delivering the completed repair back to the customer. To begin, you will need up to three things. A 4GB or preferable 8GB USB flash Drive download the Windows 10 media creation tool (if your net is good) OR a clean ISO for the windows 10 installer. If your using the iso, you will need a piece of software called Rufus. This will let you create a bootable USB from most ISO images. The Links Windows 10 media creation tool : https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10 Rufus Direct Download : https://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/rufus-2.7.exe Torrent for Windows 10 Dual installer .ISO : https://thepiratebay.se/torrent/12176822/Microsoft_Windows_10_Home_and_Pro_x64_Clean_ISO YES, I am aware that this is a torrent link. I have downloaded and tested this ISO myself ( i used it to perform the fix) IT is a clean installer with no hacks or keygens and will install windows 10 Home or Pro depending on the Product Key you own. If you need to use Rufus to create a bootable for any reason (say your internet sucks and the creation tool is going to take a week, or the tool cannot see your USB), here is a guide through the process. http://www.groovypost.com/howto/create-windows-10-bootable-usb-flash-drive/ Now things get interesting. Firstly you will need to boot off the USB flash drive. Most of the time, this involves hitting F12 as the PC or Laptop is booting up. Once this happens, the windows 10 installer will load up and ask you to chose your region and language and then select Next. Select "Repair Your Computer" Select "Advanced Options" this should be the screen you see Select "Command Prompt" Okay. The command prompt should now have show the line -> X:\Windows\System32\ We first need to find out what Drive letter (eg, D:\ or C:\) has been assigned by the recovery software to your actual OS drive. to do this, we are going to open the notepad program. simply type "notepad.exe" and it will behind the CMD windows. Click on the notepad window, select "File" and then "open" you should be able to use your mouse to make this a lot easier. click on "This PC" and it will show you the list of Drives. Take note of the Drive letter assigned to your Operation system Drive (again, eg; D:\ or E:\) Now things get interesting and a bit old school. We are going to use command lines to fix the rest of this. you need to change the Directory in command prompt to X:\Windows\System32\config (where X:\ = your primary windows partition that's having issues. EG. "cd D:\Windows\System32\Config" where D:\ is currently your OS drive) then you need to type each of these lines in, one at a time: ren X:\Windows\System32\config\DEFAULT DEFAULT.old ren X:\Windows\System32\config\SAM SAM.old ren X:\Windows\System32\config\SECURITY SECURITY.old ren X:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE SOFTWARE.old ren X:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM SYSTEM.old This renames your core registry hive files to *.old. Now we copy in the backups copy X:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\DEFAULT X:\Windows\System32\config\ copy X:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SAM X:\Windows\System32\config\ copy X:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SECURITY X:\Windows\System32\config\ copy X:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SYSTEM X:\Windows\System32\config\ copy X:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SOFTWARE X:\Windows\System32\config\ This will move the windows created registry backups into the System32\config folder to replace the old ones. Exit the command prompt and restart. This should get you into the OS. From here, i would greatly recommend backing up any data you need to. You can either leave your OS alone now and run with it, Or (and i highly recommend you do) you can reset Windows 10. To reset Windows 10 from the OS itself, you need to go to the start menu, click on "Power" and then HOLD THE SHIFT KEY AND CLICK RESTART This will restart windows in "Recovery mode" and you will be able to reset windows 10 and choose to either delete all your data or keep your personal files (select keep your files) Once it is done, you will need to reinstall any and all software you own, but your music, photos and documents, pretty much anything in your personal user folder will be transferred. Any games or software will be gone and will need to be reloaded onto your OS drive. If your Steam or Origin Library is stored on another drive, it will be fine, but you may lose your saved games, unless they were synced. I hope this will help someone in the future. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a PM, or catch me in the Teamspeak channels. Thanks for your time everyone =TS= LtAlucard1387
